With the summer still going on, festivals and fairs pop up all over Pennsylvania. Many are placed outside their towns on the fairgrounds with vendors and music. They are a good way to support the towns and enjoy a night out. But in Pittston, PA there is the one and only Tomato Festival. The sound of it makes the festival seem like just one giant meeting of farmers supporting tomatoes, but that is not the case. The Tomato Festival is Pittston’s pride and joy. It has been voted one of the best festivals in Northeastern Pennsylvania attracting over 50,000 people!
There is a reason why the Tomato Festival attracts such a big crowd. It has something for people of all ages. There are plenty of games, rides, and arts and crafts for those interested. There is also a huge bingo section where you can win great prizes. During the earlier hours there is a parade and the very popular 5k run where many people come out to run competitively and for fun. Also make sure you buy some Pennsylvania grown tomatoes, corn, and other vegetables. If you are looking to grab a bite to eat, there are plenty of venders selling delicious food too. Fried oreos, funnel cake, cotton candy, burgers, hot dogs, pizza, and more can be found here. Live music plays throughout the festival from some talented local bands giving you a great show while you enjoy the festival.
The best and most fun part of the festival is the tomato fights held on Saturday August 18th at 1:30pm! The entry fee is five dollars and is well worth the money. There is nothing more fun than pelting your friends and random strangers with tomatoes. (Note: These tomatoes are damaged and cannot be sold.)
The Tomato Festival is a great time to be had. It lasts from Thursday August 16th to Sunday August 19th. It is held right in the middle of Pittston at 304 Kennedy Boulevard. Hope to see you there!
